First Visit

We can’t wait to meet you!

During your first visit, you and your child will get to know our team. We will address your child’s general health, dietary habits, and home dental routines. We will count and clean your child’s teeth and may take radiographs (digital X-rays). During the visit, you are welcome to stay with your child the whole time or relax in our reception area. Small children who are reluctant to sit in the dental chair may be treated while sitting on your lap.

We will do our best to explain every step of the visit in language your child can understand. We want your child to be comfortable and happy when he or she comes to see the doctor and our team!

If your child has been seen previously by a dentist:

Please complete a request for dental records and send it to your child’s previous dentist as soon as possible. This will allow us to have all the information we need, especially X-rays. If you have x-rays from a previous dental visit, we may be able to take fewer during your child’s visit with us.

Preparing your child before his/her first appointment:

A child’s first visit to the dentist should be enjoyable and positive. Children are not born with fear of the dentist, though they may fear the unknown. We caution parents about using words that may make your child unnecessarily fearful or anxious, such as shot, needle, drill, X-rays, pull, scary, painful, hurt or blood. Instead we recommend helpful phrases such as these:

• Our doctors and their team will count and check your teeth
• They may use a special tooth camera to take pictures of your teeth
• They will always be nice to you and will tell you what they are doing
